The year 2020 was undoubtedly a successful year for the Tel Aviv Eco-Systen, which is also underlined by the current ‘IVC Research’ report. All indicators are pointing upwards and Tel Aviv is once again proving to be the epicentre for the start-up nation of Israel. In perspective, this is also a weakness of Israeli society and the State of Israel, if all progress and value creation is concentrated in one city or region. There needs to be more breadth and distribution in the country.
Against the background of this challenge, the main findings of the IVC Reasearch study are impressive:
- Tel Aviv tech companies accounted for 20% of the Israeli tech workforce and generated almost half of the total volume of investments and exits.
- In 2020, investments in Tel Aviv tech companies increased to $6.8 billion, 34% more than in 2019, and accounted for 48% of all investments in Israeli tech companies.
- Foreign investors hold 68% of total investments in Tel Aviv companies.
- Exits from Tel Aviv tech companies reached a record USD 4.43 billion in 2020, a 20% increase on 2019.
- There are 20 tech ‘unicorns’ based in Tel Aviv, 14 of which became ‘unicorns’ in 2020
- In the last five years, the number of tech companies active in Tel Aviv grew by 25%, compared to a 16% increase across Israel.
