More than 10.000 Antisemitic Incidents in the USA. The Eighth Front.

The Committee for Immigration, Absorption, and Diaspora Affairs convened on Tuesday to discuss the state of global antisemitism in 2024. And the state of affairs is alarming.

According to the ADL Center on Extremism, which gathers reports and tracks antisemitic incident data, these more than 10,000 antisemitic incidents break down into the following categories: Over 8,015 incidents of verbal or written harassment; over 1,840 incidents of vandalism; and over 150 incidents of physical assault. This is the highest number of incidents ever recorded in any single-year period since the ADL started tracking such incidents in 1979.

Moreover, at least 1,200 of these antisemitic incidents happened on college campuses. In the same period a year before, ADL recorded about 200 incidents, representing a 500% increase. Of these incidents, over 2,000 occurred at Jewish institutions such as synagogues and Jewish centres. More than half of all incidents at Jewish institutions took the form of bomb threats (only 81 bomb threats against Jewish institutions were recorded in the same period in the prior year).

The Eighth Front

ADL CEO and National Director Jonathan Greenblatt called upon the international community to apply pressure on the “terrorists in Rafah and Doha” to release all of the remaining hostages in Gaza. He noted that the October 7 massacre was the deadliest day for the Jewish people since the Holocaust. Since the beginning of the war, he said, there has been a 200% increase in antisemitic incidents.

The media space and the social networks are the “eighth front” in the war Israel and the Jewish people are fighting, Greenblatt argued, while stressing the importance of the battle for global public opinion. He said the approach to the fight against antisemitism had to change and called upon the Israeli government to invest more funds and adopt new tactics to combat antisemitism.

Jamie Geller, Chief Media and Marketing Officer at Aish Global said about the “eighth front“: “The fight against antisemitism should take place in every digital arena. (…) The war on social networks is raging, and we do not have adequate protection.

Minister of Diaspora Affairs and Combating Antisemitism Amichai Chikli said, “Iran is driving antisemitism on the social networks, and some of the Gulf States support the ideology of the Muslim Brotherhood.” He said antisemitic activists who are operating under the auspices of human rights groups are leading antisemitic activity worldwide.

Finally, for about 4.000 years nothing changed.
