Israel’s IsraLab Program: A New Initiative to Boost AI Research

Israel has launched the IsraLab Program, a significant initiative aimed at accelerating academic research in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning.

The program seeks to address delays in Israel’s AI development, partly attributed to the impacts of recent conflicts, by fostering collaboration between academia, the security sector, and the hi-tech industry.

The IsraLab Program establishes a unique multidisciplinary research institute that brings together representatives from Israeli universities, the security system, and the hi-tech sector. Its primary focus is on generating research to support critical supply chains where Israel holds leadership positions.

The initiative will host top-tier research groups from all Israeli universities, providing them with long-term grants spanning 7-10 years. Initial funded projects will prioritize AI and machine learning, with working groups operating on advanced computing infrastructure tied to Israel’s national AI program.

Additionally, the program plans to centralize national “heavy” research infrastructures in a single physical location, making them accessible to academic institutions and the Israeli R&D industry. Close industry partnerships will help advance research toward economic and commercial applications.

The program is a joint effort by the Ministry of Finance, the Planning and Budgeting Committee (VATAT), and the National Science Foundation. It has an annual budget of approximately 100 million shekels, allocated directly as research grants to selected groups.

Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich highlighted the program’s potential, stating: “the combination between the brilliant minds of the academia, the security system, and the industry is a force multiplier that will ensure the qualitative advantage of the State of Israel and its economic prosperity for many years to come.” (quoted in Israel Hayom)

This initiative reflects Israel’s efforts to leverage its strengths in cyber technology and redirect experienced manpower toward AI advancements, positioning the country at the forefront of global research in this strategic field.
