The world famous Weizmann Institute of Science (Israel) established a kind of a new eco-system to create start-ups out of early but promising research on the Weizmann Institute named BINA. The name BINA is both an acronym (Bridge, Innovate, Nurture, Advance) and a regualar word in Ivrit, meaning ‘wisdom‘.
With own words “Bina identifies, nurtures and supports early-stage basic research projects which are likely to produce intellectual property with practical applications.” Within the organizational frame, Bina is established as a scientific unit at the Weizmann Institute of Science, belonging to the office of the Vice President for Innovation and Technology Transfer.
BINA is hence a new link in the chain intended to nurture and develop basic research projects and technologies. The Bina team, according to the description by the press release of the Weizmann Institute, “(…) guides projects towards a working proof of concept, after which they are duly referred to the next, veteran link in the chain: Yeda, the commercial arm of the Weizmann Institute.”
Prof. Sagi, Vice President of Innovation and Technology Transfer explains the gap and how BINA bridges this gap: “I realized there was a gap between the labs and the commercial arm of the institute. That is, between scientific innovation and technological innovation — and that this gap needs to be bridged. This is where Bina comes in.“
Bina is currently nurturing and funding 26 projects – including 14 in life sciences; four in food and agricultural technology and another four in computer science – which receive customized guidance from industry experts with 12 additional projects in the evaluation stage. BINA is in other words already a success.

Das weltberühmte Weizmann-Institut (Israel) hat eine Art neues Ökosystem geschaffen, um Start-ups aus früher, aber vielversprechender Forschung am Weizmann-Institut mit dem Namen BINA zu gründen. Der Name BINA ist sowohl ein Akronym (Bridge, Innovate, Nurture, Advance) als auch ein reguläres Wort in Ivrit und bedeutet„Weisheit“.
Mit eigenen Worten “identifiziert, fördert und unterstützt Bina Grundlagenforschungsprojekte im Frühstadium, die wahrscheinlich geistiges Eigentum mit praktischen Anwendungen hervorbringen.” Organisatorisch ist BINA als wissenschaftliche Einheit am Weizmann Institute of Science angesiedelt, das zum Büro des Vizepräsidenten für Innovation und Technologietransfer gehört.
BINA ist somit ein neues Glied in der Kette zur Förderung und Entwicklung von Grundlagenforschungsprojekten und -technologien. Das Bina-Team, so die Beschreibung in der Pressemitteilung des Weizmann-Instituts, “(…) führt Projekte zu einem funktionierenden Proof of Concept, wonach sie ordnungsgemäß an das nächste, altgediente Glied in der Kette weitergeleitet werden: Yeda, der kommerzielle Zweig des Weizmann-Instituts.”
Prof. Sagi, Vizepräsident für Innovation und Technologietransfer, erklärt die Lücke und wie BINA diese Lücke schließt: „Mir wurde klar, dass es eine Lücke zwischen den Labors und dem kommerziellen Arm des Instituts gab. Das heißt, zwischen wissenschaftlicher Innovation und technologischer Innovation – und dass diese Kluft überbrückt werden muss. Hier kommt Bina ins Spiel.“
BINA fördert und finanziert derzeit 26 Projekte – darunter 14 in den Biowissenschaften; vier in Lebensmittel- und Agrartechnologie und weitere vier in Informatik – die mit 12 zusätzlichen Projekten in der Bewertungsphase von Branchenexperten individuell betreut werden. BINA kann man sagen ist bereits ein Erfolgsprojekt.
