Festival on Innovation in Tel Aviv: A Critique – D/E

Covid is done and conferences are coming back. One of the largest conferences in the world will soon take place in Tel Aviv. However, the festival did not understand that the Middle East changed. Learn more on ‘VonNaftali’: Subscription $29,90/year

The DLD TLV Innovation Festival takes next year February place in Tel Aviv under the “lead” of BURDA Media (Germany) and DLD Media (Germany) with close relation to BURDA Media. Of interest: Franz Burda, founder of BURDA Medien, was a convinced National Socialist. As early as 1933, Franz Burda boasted in the ‘Sürag‘ that he had no Jewish employees or shareholders and emphasized the newspaper’s Nazi sentiment. An conviction that he maintained documented until 1969.

The DLD TLV Innovation Festival claims: “After a two year hiatus, the annual festival is returning, in person, to Tel Aviv. It will showcase the brightest minds in Israel and the world, include a professional conference and side events, meetups, and parties – all dedicated to innovation in every sector imaginable.“

Indeed, some important minds are attending like Yossi Vardi or Amir Rapaport. The program is a motley bouquet across all areas of technology. One looks in vain for a focus, a concept, an idea. Just ‘innovation’ in an undefined manner is the bracket. That’s not enough and a weak approach.

However, what is missing: Philosophy and Artificial Intelligence. ‘VonNaftali‘ will maybe make a proposal.

To give suggestions for topics is maybe one of the strongest and best features of this “festival” which seems to be more a life-style event with some side events and going to the beach as a look in the program assures you.

But it’s not really a “festival to celebrate innovations”, because no real celebration of real innovations. Instead, a very German log list of themes and speakers. Everything worked fine and consensually.

I am not sure, if that can be called a “festival” at all. If so, than it is a very German-style “festival”: Fun is to throwing some cakes unto the next face, wearing a red cardboard nose and loughing about it.

At the moment 32 speaker are presented from nearly all corners of Europe, some USA, Asia and of course Israel. However, The speakers are certainly all important, but it’s an all too colorful bouquet that you get tired of looking at.

But, and said as a “big but,” no one from the Abrahamic Accords states is present. The Abrahm Accords are not an issue at all. No concept and no vision aboutthe new Middle East as created by the “Abraham Accords”. This is astounding. A colourful, meaningless party-world rejoices. That’s not enough.

However, the organizer are announcing on many pages of their website that ‘DLD schedule subject to change“. One may hope to the better. Then we want to close with the claim that this festival raises in its own words:

“The DLD Tel Aviv Innovation Festival is a celebration of Israeli innovation and its contribution to the global ecosystem. Highlighting Tel Aviv, known as the Non-Stop City, this unique event attracts participants and visitors from around the world. This is the festival that international investors, young entrepreneurs, and curious Tel Avivis anticipate every year. (…) Within the DLD Tel Aviv Festival, the Summit is a buzzing hub for leading business and digital professionals. It gathers the most creative and inventive people from Israel and around the world to share their innovative ideas.“: PROST!

Covid ist fertig und die Konferenzen kommen zurück. Bald findet in Tel Aviv eine der größten Konferenzen der Welt statt. Das Festival hat jedoch nicht verstanden, dass sich der Nahe Osten verändert hat.

Das DLD TLV Innovation Festival findet nächstes Jahr im Februar in Tel Aviv unter der “Leitung” von BURDA Media (Deutschland) und DLD Media (Deutschland) mit enger Verbindung zu BURDA Media statt. Interessant: Franz Burda, Gründer der BURDA Medien, war überzeugter Nationalsozialist. Bereits 1933 rühmte sich Franz Burda in der „Sürag“, keine jüdischen Mitarbeiter oder Aktionäre zu haben und betonte die Nazi-Gesinnung der Zeitung. Eine Überzeugung, die er bis 1969 dokumentiert aufrecht erhielt.

Das DLD TLV Innovation Festival führt aus: „Nach einer zweijährigen Pause kehrt das jährliche Festival nach Tel Aviv zurück. Es wird die klügsten Köpfe in Israel und der Welt präsentieren, eine Fachkonferenz und Nebenveranstaltungen, Treffen und mehr beinhalten Parteien – alle haben sich der Innovation in allen erdenklichen Sektoren verschrieben.“

In der Tat sind einige wichtige Köpfe wie Yossi Vardi oder Amir Rapaport präsent. Das Programm hingegen ist ein bunter Strauß quer durch alle Bereiche der Technik. Einen Fokus, ein Konzept, eine Idee sucht man vergeblich. Nur „Innovation“ auf eine undefinierte Weise ist die Klammer. Das ist zu wenig und schwach.

Ein Blick in die Liste der „Hauptthemen“ spricht für sich selbst: HealthTech, Wearables – Virtual Reality oder Augmented Reality, FoodTech & AgriTech, Smart Cities, Video Games, Cyber, Autonomous Platforms: Vehicles, Drones, and More, Fintech, Innovation B. Public Diplomacy, EduTech, Cloud-Technologien, IoT, Robotik, Technologie bringt Kunst hervor, Tech for Good, WaterTech, Datenschutz, Fake News, Bedrohungen sozialer Netzwerke, Web 3.0, Building Country Ecosystems, Meeting between VCs & Startups, AI, Big Daten, Big Learning, Quantencomputer, Videos und Streaming und Erstellung von Inhalten. Was jedoch fehlt: Philosophie und Künstliche Intelligenz. ‘VonNaftali‘ wird vielleicht einen Vorschlag machen. Oder noch besser: Über die Abraham Accords.

Vorschläge für Themen einzureichen, ist vielleicht eine der stärksten und besten Features dieses “Festivals”, das eher ein Lifestyle-Event mit einigen Nebenveranstaltungen und Strandbesuchen zu sein scheint, wie ein Blick in das Programm versichert.

Aber es ist auch nicht wirklich ein “Festival der Innovationen”, weil keine wirkliche Feier echter Innovationen auszumachen ist. Stattdessen eine lange und von daher typisch deutsche Protokollliste mit Themen und Referenten. Alles fein und konsensual abgearbeitet.

Ich bin mir nicht sicher, ob man das überhaupt als ein “Festival” bezeichnen kann. Wenn ja, dann ist es ein sehr deutsches „Fest“: Spaß macht es, ein paar Kuchen in das nächste Gesicht zu werfen, eine rote Pappnase aufzusetzen und dann laut zu lachen.

Zur Zeit präsentieren sich 32 Referenten aus fast allen Ecken Europas, einige aus den USA, Asien und natürlich Israel. Allerdings, die Vortragenden sind sicherlich alle wichtig, aber es ist ein allzu bunter Strauß, an dem man sich rasch satt sieht.

Aber, und zwar ein „großes Aber“, niemand aus den Staaten der ‘Abraham Accords’ ist anwesend. Die Abrahm Accords sind kein Thema. Kein Konzept und keine Vorstellung über den neuen Nahen Osten, der durch die „Abraham-Abkommen“ geschaffen wurde Das erstaunt einen. Eine bunte nichts-sagende Partywelt jubelt.

Aber der Veranstalter kündigt auf vielen Seiten seiner Website an, dass “DLD-Zeitplanänderungen vorbehalten sind“. Man darf auf Besserung hoffen. Dann wollen wir mit dem Anspruch, den dieses Festival in seinen eigenen Worten erhebt, schließen: “Das DLD Tel Aviv Innovation Festival ist eine Feier der israelischen Innovation und ihres Beitrags zur globales Ökosystem. Diese einzigartige Veranstaltung, die Tel Aviv hervorhebt, das als Non-Stop City bekannt ist, zieht viele Besucher an Teilnehmer und Besucher aus aller Welt. Dies ist das Festival, das internationale Investoren, junge Unternehmer und neugierige Tel Aviver erwarten jedes Jahr. (…) Im Rahmen des DLD Tel Aviv Festivals ist der Gipfel ein lebhafter Treffpunkt für führende Geschäfts- und Digitalexperten. Es versammelt die kreativsten und einfallsreichsten Menschen aus Israel und der ganzen Welt, um ihre innovativen Ideen zu teilen.“: PROST!
