Knesset: The term “West Bank” will be replaced by “Judea and Samaria”. Maybe

In the first reading of the Knesset plenum, it was approved that “West Bank” would be replaced by “Judea and Samaria” in all legislation pertaining to the Judea and Samaria territories.

A good step by the ‘Chamberlain” coalition aka right-wing coalition. However, one may ask why restricted to legislation pertaining to Judea and Samraia and not in general. The typical loophole for a ‘Chamberlain” coalition.

In its sitting last Wednesday, the Knesset Plenum voted to approve in preliminary reading the Correction of Terms in Legislation Bill (Judea and Samaria), 2024, sponsored by MK Simcha Rothman (Religious Zionism).

In the vote, 33 Members of Knesset supported the bill, versus 10 who opposed it, and it will be turned over to the House Committee to choose the committee that will deliberate the bill.

The explanatory notes to the bill state: “The bill is intended to regulate the use of the uniform term “Judea and Samaria” in Israeli legislation, and to replace other terms that refer to the same geographical region. The correction is intended to create terminological uniformity in legislation, which will befit the status of these territories and the proper attitude towards them in official legislation of the State of Israel. (…) Replacing the term ‘West Bank’ with the term ‘Judea and Samaria’ will express the legislator’s recognition of the historical right of the Jewish people to its land, and will rectify a historical injustice that was created by foreigners. This change conforms to the general trend of strengthening the Israeli linkage to the region and safeguarding the Jewish people’s historical rights.”

It remains to be seen whether the Knesset’s decision will ultimately be allowed and accepted by the various organs of Israel’s ‘deep state’, which critics describe as far left-wing and hostile to the government.

Many regard those elites of the ‘deep state’ as far left-wing who have the final say and not the elected Knesset and the government. The elites of the ‘deep state’ were all appointed by the Likud and its coalition partner. The Likud can therefore be described as the leading left-wing party in Israel.

Finally, one must ask what sense this decision makes if the terrorist organization is allowed to continue operating in Judea and Samaria and the “Palestinians” are not expelled from the land of Israel.
