Neuerlich dürfte ein entscheidender Durchbruch aus Israel kommen, nachdem Israel die erfolgreichste Impfkampagne der Welt geführt hatte und die Erkenntnisse daraus wie Daten oder Prozesse der Welt zur Verfügung stellte.
In der aktuellen Pressemitteilung des israelischen Unternehmens Oramed, das an der Börse Tel Aviv (TASE) und an der Nasdaq (New York) notiert und Glocalist Lesern bestens bekannt ist, heißt es: “Oramed Pharmaceuticals Inc. ist auf die Entwicklung von oralen Medikamentenverabreichungssystemen konzentriert. Das Unternehmen gab bekannt, dass es endgültige Vereinbarungen zur Gründung eines Joint Ventures getroffen habe, das sich auf die Entwicklung neuartiger oraler COVID-19-Impfstoffe konzentrieren werde. Das neue Unternehmen, Oravax Medical Inc., basiert auf der firmeneigenen oralen Verabreichungstechnologie POD™ von Oramed und der neuartigen Impfstofftechnologie von Premas Biotech Pvt. Ltd.”
Ein weiterer Hintergrund ist, wie die Jerusalem Post berichtet, dass es Oramed auch auf Grundlage von Technologie des Hadassah-University Medical Center (Jerusalem) gelungen ist, einen oralen Impfstoff zu produzieren, der in einer präklinischen Studie schließlich erfolgreich Antikörper mit nur einer einzigen Dosis erzeugte. Nun soll rasch die erste klinische Studie folgen. Man hofft, dass die 1.te Phase klinische Studie im Laufe des 2.ten Quartal stattfinden wird.
Fachlich führt das Unternehmen in der Pressemitteilung weiter aus: “Der Impfstoffkandidat COVID-19 von Oravax profitiert davon, dass es sich um einen virusähnlichen Partikel-Impfstoff (VLP) handelt, der auf drei Strukturproteine abzielt, was ihn zu einem besseren Kandidaten für den Schutz vor neuen Mutationen des Coronavirus auch machen sollte. Die orale Verabreichung des Impfstoffs sollte eine weitreichende Impfung und eine einfachere Verteilung des Impfstoffs ermöglichen, ohne dass eine Injektion erforderlich ist.” Und wie man weiter anmerken muss, eine komplexe Kühlkette nicht bedarf, was die Logistik erheblich vereinfacht.
Und in der Pressemitteilung des Unternehmens heißt es weiter: “In einer Pilot-Tierstudie förderte der orale COVID-19-Impfstoff sowohl die systemische Immunität durch Immunglobulin G (IgG), den häufigsten Antikörper in Blut und Körperflüssigkeiten, der vor Virusinfektionen schützt, als auch durch Immunglobulin A (IgA). Oravax rechnet mit dem Beginn einer klinischen Studie im zweiten Quartal 2021.”
“Ein oraler COVID-19-Impfstoff würde mehrere Barrieren für eine schnelle, breite Verteilung beseitigen und es den Menschen ermöglichen, den Impfstoff selbst zu Hause einzunehmen. Während die einfache Verabreichung heute entscheidend ist, um die Impfraten zu beschleunigen, könnte ein oraler Impfstoff noch wertvoller werden, wenn ein COVID-19-Impfstoff wie die Standard-Grippeimpfung jährlich empfohlen wird“, sagte Nadav Kidron, CEO von Oramed abschließend.

Once again, a key breakthrough is likely to come from Israel, after Israel led the world’s most successful vaccination campaign and made its findings, like data and organisational know-how, available to the world.
The latest press release from Israeli company Oramed, which is listed on the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange (TASE) and Nasdaq (New York) and is well known to Glocalist readers, states that “Oramed Pharmaceuticals Inc. is focused on the development of oral drug delivery systems. The company announced that it has reached definitive agreements to form a joint venture that will focus on the development of novel COVID-19 oral vaccines. The new company, Oravax Medical Inc, is based on Oramed’s proprietary POD™ oral drug delivery technology and the novel vaccine technology of Premas Biotech Pvt. Ltd.”
Further background, as reported by the Jerusalem Post, is that Oramed also succeeded in producing an oral vaccine based on technology from Hadassah University Medical Center (Jerusalem), which eventually successfully produced single-dose antibodies in a preclinical study. Now the first clinical trial is to follow quickly. It is hoped that the 1st phase clinical trial will take place during the 2nd quarter.
Professionally, the company further states in the press release, “Oravax’s COVID-19 vaccine candidate benefits from being a virus-like particle (VLP) vaccine that targets three structural proteins, which should make it a better candidate for protection against new mutations of coronavirus as well. Oral administration of the vaccine should allow for widespread vaccination and easier distribution of the vaccine without the need for injection.” And, it should be further noted, does not require a complex cold chain, which greatly simplifies logistics.
And the press release of Oramed goes on to say, “In a pilot animal study, the oral COVID-19 vaccine promoted systemic immunity through both immunoglobulin G (IgG), the most abundant antibody in blood and body fluids that protects against viral infections, and immunoglobulin A (IgA). Oravax expects to initiate a clinical trial in the second quarter of 2021.”
“An oral COVID-19 vaccine would remove several barriers to rapid, widespread distribution and allow people to take the vaccine themselves at home. While ease of administration is critical to accelerating vaccination rates today, an oral vaccine could become even more valuable if COVID-19 vaccine is recommended annually like the standard flu shot,” concluded Nadav Kidron, CEO of Oramed.
