Der US-Technologieriese Google erklärte am Montag, dass er die Entwicklung und den Bau von kundenspezifischen Chips “verdoppeln” wolle, um die Leistung seiner Computersysteme zu steigern. Dafür hat Google den Israeli Uri FRank zum Leiter des Chip-Team ernannt, der rund 25 Jahre für INTEL in leitenden Positionen tätig war.
Im Blog von Google heißt es: “Seit unserer Gründung vor mehr als zwei Jahrzehnten hat Google einige der größten und effizientesten Computersysteme der Welt entwickelt und gebaut, um die Anforderungen unserer Kunden und Nutzer zu erfüllen. Maßgeschneiderte Chips sind eine Möglichkeit, die Leistung und Effizienz zu steigern, jetzt, da das Mooresche Gesetz nicht mehr für schnelle Verbesserungen für alle sorgt. Heute verdoppeln wir diesen Ansatz.
Die Zukunft der Cloud-Infrastruktur ist vielversprechend und sie verändert sich schnell. Während wir weiterhin daran arbeiten, die Computing-Anforderungen aus der ganzen Welt zu erfüllen, freuen wir uns heute, Uri Frank als VP of Engineering für das Server-Chip-Design begrüßen zu dürfen. Uri bringt fast 25 Jahre Erfahrung in der Entwicklung und Lieferung von kundenspezifischen CPUs mit und wird uns dabei helfen, ein Weltklasse-Team in Israel aufzubauen. Google führt seit 2005 F&E-Aktivitäten in Israel – so in Haifa oder Tel Aviv – mit Teams, die auf die Bereiche maschinelles Lernen, künstliche Intelligenz, Verarbeitung natürlicher Sprache und maschinelle Wahrnehmung fokussiert sind.

The U.S. technology giant Google said Monday it plans to “double down” on designing and building custom chips to boost the performance of its computer systems. To that end, Google has appointed Israeli Uri FRank to lead the Chip-team, who spent some 25 years in senior positions at INTEL.
Google’s blog says, “Since our inception more than two decades ago, Google has designed and built some of the world’s largest and most efficient computing systems to meet the needs of our customers and users. Custom chips are one way to boost performance and efficiency now that Moore’s Law no longer provides rapid improvements for everyone. Today, we are doubling down on this approach.
The future of cloud infrastructure is bright, and it’s changing fast. As we continue to work to meet computing demands from around the world, today we are thrilled to welcome Uri Frank as our VP of Engineering for server chip design. Uri brings nearly 25 years of custom CPU design and delivery experience, and will help us build a world-class team in Israel. We’ve long looked to Israel for novel technologies including Waze, Call Screen, flood forecasting, high-impact features in Search, and Velostrata’s cloud migration tools, and we look forward to growing our presence in this global innovation hub,” said Amin Vahdat, vice president of Google, in his blog.
Google has been conducting R&D activities in Israel – such as in Haifa or Tel Aviv – since 2005, with teams focused on machine learning, artificial intelligence, natural language processing and machine perception.
