Due to the war: Stern Warning about Asbestos

The Ministry of Environmental Protection and the Ministry of Health warned of potential exposure to possible asbestos hazards following the war in the North.

As a result of direct hits, blasts, and shrapnel during the war, asbestos cement roofs were damaged, primarily in the northern region. Physical damage to a structure containing asbestos can cause the release of asbestos fibres that were trapped in the asbestos sheets, becoming a hazard as defined by law.

In light of the preparations for the return of residents to the north and the welcome public initiative to assist residents, the Ministry of Environmental Protection and the Ministry of Health are informing the population about the health dangers of exposure to asbestos hazards and how to avoid them. Cleaning and remediation of asbestos hazards that are done independently may result in the exposure of the population to a substance that is classified as carcinogenic.

Guidelines

• Do not enter buildings and yards where asbestos fragments are scattered or fragments suspected of being asbestos.
• Do not touch asbestos fragments or fragments suspected of being asbestos.
• Windows should not be opened in homes near which there is an asbestos hazard. 
• Objects may not be removed from buildings where there is an asbestos hazard or suspicion of an asbestos hazard. 
• To receive financial compensation for the removal of the asbestos hazard, you must contact the Tax Authority to file a claim for direct damage
