The Israel Innovation Authority announced that Israeli researchers and companies have secured €1.1 billion in funding from the Horizon Europe program between 2021 and 2024, reaffirming Israel’s global standing in research, innovation, and technology.
Background > Horizon Europe stands as the world’s largest research and innovation program, blending scientific ambition with practical solutions to shape a greener, healthier, and more competitive Europe by 2030. Horizon Europe spans 2021 to 2027 with a budget of €95.5 billion (in current prices), a significant increase from Horizon 2020’s €77 billion. Horizon Europe was proposed by the European Commission in May 2018 as a bold step to elevate the EU’s role in global science and innovation
The funding spans multiple sectors and highlights the outstanding achievements of Israeli academia, industry, and small-to-medium enterprises (SMEs):
- Academia: 605 researchers awarded approximately €592 million.
- Industry: 386 companies received €228 million in funding.
- SMEs: 40 companies secured €95 million.
- EIC Accelerator Program: Israeli companies obtained an additional €242 million.
- ERC Grants: Israel remains among the leading recipients of European Research Council (ERC) grants, with 390 researchers awarded €489 million.
- Consortium Projects: 626 Israeli researchers and companies participated in collaborative European projects, securing €234 million.
- Green Deal (Climate & Sustainability): 195 Israeli researchers received €110 million for climate and sustainability initiatives. (all facts provided by IIA)
VonNaftali: Without Israel’s participation, Horizon Europe would be much poorer in terms of its level of innovation. Perhaps many EU politicians also harbour resentment toward Israel, which regularly outperformed Europe, because Israel shows no ambition to become a member of the European Union.
